Who we are

This privacy notice applies to wilhelmvanzyl.com (the “publication”), an independent publication of Johan Wilhelm van Zyl. It explains how personal information is handled in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA) of South Africa.

What we collect

We collect only what you give us and what is needed to run the publication:

• Email address, when you choose to subscribe to the newsletter.
• Aggregate, privacy-friendly analytics via Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies, does not fingerprint visitors, and does not track you across sites.

If you preorder the Notes notebook

When you preorder Notes, we collect the details needed to fulfil your order: your name, email address, country and quantity. We use these only to confirm, invoice, produce and ship your numbered copy, and to contact you about it. Where payment is taken, it is processed by a third-party payment provider (for example Payfast); we never see or store your card details. Order records are kept only as long as needed for fulfilment, accounting and legal obligations, and are then deleted.

Why we use it

Your email is used solely to send the writing and updates you asked for. Analytics are used only to understand aggregate traffic so the publication can be improved. We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you.

Consent and your choice

You provide your email voluntarily, and your consent is the basis on which we send it. You may unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information at any time, with no obligation.

Who processes it

We use trusted operators to deliver the publication: Netlify (website hosting and form handling) and Cloudflare (analytics and content delivery). These operators process information on our behalf and may store it on servers outside South Africa. We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information to anyone.

How long we keep it

We keep your email only for as long as you remain subscribed or until you ask us to remove it, after which it is deleted.

Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to withdraw consent, and to object to its processing. You may also lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa).
